Fabulous early OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS of a man in what looks like 1700's dress playing a flute !!! This painting is well executed in a realistic style. Signed on lower right what looks like: A. Durborg. The painting has come slightly loose from the frame but still attached. There are a series of numbers etched on lower back of stretchers and are as follows: 222-221-178. I was told this hung in a Museum at one time and those are the catalog numbers. This is a very important piece of work and dates to the early 1800's or earlier. The frame needs some repair but enough of it is intact to use as a template for the missing pieces. The painting is in excellent condition for the age of it with only a slight crease line on the left side where the stretcher is behind it. No flaking paint. Colors are wonderful in early american hues of mustard, cranberry, burnt umber, etc. The man's eyes are very expressive and the detail on this work is exceptional from his fingernails to the buttons on his coat and the flute. Painting measures approx. 9" x 11.5" and the frame is approx. 2 & 3/4" wide. Great detail to the stack of books that are propping up the sheet music. Table cloth is a lovely shade of cranberry red. Will be well wrapped and padded. Great old painting! Free shipping anywhere in the United States of America includes delivery confirmation and insurance.
