Perkes Bronze BILGE HAND PUMP sku21001150 STORE CATEGORIES: Antiques | ----- Great vintage antique “C. Perkes, Philadelphia” bilge hand pump with nice old as-found patina. Except for the wooden handle and cast iron base (that one puts one’s shoe through to steady the pump during operation) it appears to be made entirely of bronze — I’m pretty sure it is bronze, though I suppose it could be some sort of similar brass/alloy. “C. Perkes, Phila” is molded into both the pump body, and the iron base. Stamped circumferentially around the threaded body cap/top: “Pat Mar 15, 1898 - June 18, ’01” [1901] Those two patents, issued to Inventor Charles Perkes, are shown below. Vital stats: The pump body is 2.00" O.D. by about 10" long. Inside diameter (where the plunger moves) is 1.84" I.D. The plunger inside appears to be leather, and is in good shape considering its age. Overall height retracted is 24-1/8" tall, with stroke extended about 33" tall overall. Nice comfortable two-hand wooden handle is 8-1/2" wide. This item weighs in at a very solid 10 lb 1 oz (4563 g). The water inlet is 2" from the floor, and the water outlet fits the female end of a standard 3/4" garden hose. I did not test whether or not it pumps water — I didn't want water inside messing up shipping/padding — but the plunger operates up/down as it should, and I feel air pressure on the outlet when pumping. But you should assume that it needs work/maintenance to be operational/reliable as a bilge pump on your boat or ship. See the supersize photos where I have unscrewed the top of the pump, so that you might determine its condition for modern use. Pumping action is essentially smooth; probably even more so if some grease were added to the plunger inside — but I’ve left that to you, if you so choose to do so. Patents D28379 and D34675. Perhaps usable on your boat, barge, sailboat, or ship — but it would look equally great on the shelf with your other maritime and nautical antiques and collectibles.
